Founding Dean of Pharmacy

Job Description:
Samuel Merritt College, a regionally accredited health sciences institution, is seeking an experienced pharmacy educator and leader to develop a new school of pharmacy on its home campus in Oakland, California.

SMC is a growing institution of 1,200 students with undergraduate programs in nursing and graduate programs in nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and podiatric medicine. The College currently offers two clinical doctoral programs (DPM & DPT), and Pharmacy is the third doctoral program approved by the Board of Regents.

The College is an affiliate of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, and part of the Sutter Health System, a not-for-profit health system with 26 hospitals, and clinical agencies throughout northern California. This relationship provides a unique opportunity for outstanding clinical affiliations and development of clinical residencies in addition to the Pharm.D. program.

The College is located in the vibrant San Francisco Bay area, which offers a plethora of academic, professional, and cultural resources. SMC’s home campus is in Oakland, California and satellite campuses are in Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Mateo. Scheduled to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009, Samuel Merritt College has embarked on an aggressive strategic plan and enlarged mission to become a nationally recognized, multi-specialty health sciences institution.

Responsibilities: The Dean will be responsible for all aspects of developing the new school of pharmacy, including recruitment and development of faculty and staff; curriculum planning and implementation; development of a research agenda, accreditation; partnerships with hospitals, community pharmacies, and other clinical sites; fundraising; fiscal management, and facilities and strategic planning.

The Dean will work closely with the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Services to recruit students and to provide support services; and with the Office of Institutional Research to ensure monitoring and analysis of program outcomes.

The successful candidate must have an earned Pharm.D. or Ph.D. degree in a pharmaceutical science discipline. The preferred candidate will have an impressive record as a faculty member and administrator with a minimum of ten years experience as a faculty member in an accredited school of pharmacy and prior administrative experience as an administrator at the level of Chair or higher.

An outstanding level of knowledge of current pharmacy practice, professional accreditation standards and procedures, and contemporary issues and trends in pharmacy is essential. Effective communication skills, ability to recruit and mentor faculty, and strategic planning and management skills are also core competencies required for this position.
