Vice President for Finance and Administration

The American University of Nigeria, in affiliation with the American University, Washington, D.C., invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Finance and Administration. The American University of Nigeria (AUN), located in Yola, the Capital of the Adamawa State, seeks a dynamic, creative individual to join the senior administrative team. Envisioned to be a model for Africa, the University, currently in its third year of operation, is a rapidly growing, private, non-profit university in northeast Nigeria featuring a wireless campus, state-of-the-art buildings and infrastructure, small classes, and a preponderance of US educated faculty and senior administrators. AUN is the first private, American-style University in Nigeria.

The AUN Vice President for Finance and Administration reports directly to the President and works closely and cooperatively with appropriate committees of the Board of Trustees, the vice presidents, various directors, and other administrators. The Vice President for Finance and Administration will be responsible for the institution’s strategic planning related to finance operations, budget and business planning, business operations, financial reporting, monitoring of budget, audits, and capital projects and construction. He/she will also ensure that policies, procedures and internal processes are managed in an effective, timely, accurate, efficient, and principled fashion. Further, this position is responsible for the preparation of budget proposals to the Board of Trustees of the university, as well as other reports and information needed for institutional decision-making and disclosure as required by the University.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration are:
the Director of Financial Operations;
the Purchasing and Contracts Manager;
the Director of Physical Planning;
the Director of Human Resources; and
the Director of IT.

The Vice President for Finance and Administration is responsible for and oversight of the following areas:

  • Strategic planning related to financial projections, capital needs and other aspects of the university’s growth and development;
  • Annual and multi-year budget and business planning, including budget proposals and resource allocation recommendations to the President and the Board of Trustees;
  • Financial operations of the university including receivables, expenditure, payroll, and reconciliation;
  • Financial reporting including monthly budget performance reports, cash flow statements, and annual financial statements;
  • Purchasing activities;
  • Contracts between the university and external parties to ensure that funding is available as needed and in accord with approved budgets and financial policies and procedures;
  • Financial Policies and Procedures for the institution and their publication;
  • Implementation of software, policies, and procedures to support the areas of responsibility;
  • Staff development to improve services in support the areas that report to the Vice President;
  • Facilities and equipment maintenance;
  • IT systems and services for the campus community;
  • Human Resource and related personnel services;
  • Recommendations to the President and the Board of Trustees related to the selection of the external auditor; and
  • Other financial documents and procedures as may be required.


Qualifications:
The selected candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline, a master’s degree or C.P.A. certification, and ten years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within higher education. Experience working in an overseas environment is a plus. Preferred candidates should demonstrate themselves as a results-driven professional; have proven expertise in financial management; the ability to develop fiscal policies and procedures and to implement programs; excellent analytical skills with business acumen; demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills to build coalitions with various constituencies; and excellent communication and management skills.
